Regarding writing and the domains of history, we should mention the multiplicity, evolution and scope of the historiographical component of O Instituto over the course of its existence, with individuals such as Augusto Filipe Simões (1835-1884), Francisco de Sousa Viterbo (1845-1910), Augusto Mendes Simões de Castro (1845-1932), João Correia Ayres de Campos (1847-1920), Eduardo Joaquim Brazão (1851-1925), João Lúcio de Azevedo (1855-1933), José Maria de Queiroz Veloso (1860-1952), António Baião (1878- 1961), Francisco Manuel Alves (1865-1947), o Abade de Baçal, Vergílio Correia (1888-1944), Paulo Merêa (1889-1977), Armando Cortesão (1891-1977), Joaquim de Carvalho (1892-1958), Artur de Magalhães Basto (1894-1960), Manuel Lopes de Almeida (1900-1980), Torquato Brochado de Sousa Soares (1903-1988), Virgínia Rau (1907-1973), Joaquim Veríssimo Serrão (1925-), etc., etc. In the same vein, we recall the invaluable contributions of foreign historians such as Edgar Prestage (1869-1951), Marcel Bataillon (1895-1977), and Yves Renouard (1908-1965), among many other historiographers. We should also mention the publication of unpublished documents and historical sources that are indispensable to O Instituto 's historiography.
In the field of literary criticism, linguistic studies, and artistic exhibitions, we should highlight names like Antero de Quental (1842-1891), Teófilo Braga (1843-1924), Abílio Guerra Junqueiro (1850-1923), Carolina Michaëlis (1851-1925), Eugénio de Castro (1869-1944), Fidelino de Figueiredo (1889-1967), or Vitorino Nemésio (1901-1978), although it would be too difficult to list all the authors involved in any area of study.
To find out more about the editorial organisation of O Instituto , there are four different series with the same original ornament and mission that succeeded it: 1st series: vol. I (1852)-vol. XVI (1873); 2nd series: vol. XVII (1873)-vol. XXXIX (1891/1892); 3rd series: vol. XL (1892)-vol. LXXI (1924); 4th series: vol. LXXII (1925)-vols. CXL/CXLI (1981), the last volume of which was directed by Rui Braga Carrington da Costa (1932-1994). He would definitively cease his duties afterwards, although there were plans to publish another two volumes, which turned out to be cancelled due to several factors. For the reader's convenience and to help the researchers in the quest to keep the memory of O Institutoalive, all 141 digitised volumes are available for access in full on an electronic platform, which serves as a documentary support for doctoral work and lines of research currently underway.
