The Revista de Guimarães originated within a Guimarães institution, the Sociedade Martins Sarmento . The first meeting of the Sociedade was held on 20 November 1881, initiated by notable local figures such as Domingos Leite de Castro, Avelino da Silva Guimarães, Avelino da Costa Freitas, José da Cunha Sampaio, and Domingos José Ferreira Júnior, who aimed to honour the Guimarães archaeologist Martins Sarmento and contribute to the development of Guimarães. Martins Sarmento had been honoured by the French President, an achievement met with silence from both the Guimarães and Portuguese authorities ( Acta de Instalação da Sociedade Martins Sarmento [Martins Sarmento Society Installation Minutes] , 20 November 1881). On 27 January 1883, the board of the Martins Sarmento Society submitted a proposal for the creation of a journal, which was approved during the General Meeting on 7 February (Martins Sarmento Society, Proposta para acriação… [Proposal for the creation...] , 1883 ) . On 15 June 1884, the Guimarães industrial exhibition was inaugurated, which was envisioned by this society. The initial concept was likely the work of Domingos Leite de Castro. Some members of the cultural organisation were involved in industry (PINTO, M. T. V. Pinto, Teresa Valente, A Formação das Mulheres no Ensino Industrial Público [The Training of Women in Public Industrial Education] (1884-1910), 2008, pp. 225-226). It is essential to confirm that the Revista de Guimarães reflected the principles, goals, and values of its founding institution from the very beginning. The periodical's directors changed over time, with nearly all from Guimarães (Meireles, Maria José, Directores da Revista de Guimarães [Directors of the Guimarães Journal], 1991, pp. 363-365). Here are their names: Domingos Leite de Castro (1884 to 1887 and 1894 to 1898); Avelino Germano da Costa Freitas (1888); José da Silva Monteiro (1889); Avelino da Silva Guimarães (1890 to 1893); Father José Maria Fiúza (1899); Joaquim José de Meira (1900, 1901, and 1905 to 1907); João Gomes d'Oliveira Guimarães, Abade de Tagilde (1902 to 1904); Eduardo de Almeida (1908, 1921 to 1925, and 1929 to 1931); João Martins de
