1. Intellectual biographies:
a selection of around 200 Portuguese historians from the contemporary period, placing their historical thinking in the context of the society of their times, and including sufficient detail to enable the reader, through these individual portraits, to deepen their knowledge of the national historical community at different points in time. Also included will be a number of foreign historians.
2. Thematic entries:
a) historiography and the social sciences: evaluations and future prospects
these entries will provide an overview of areas and specific themes in Portuguese historiography, such as the following: anthropology and history, chroniclers, biography, literary studies, cultural history, diplomatic history, political history, history of institutions, history of law, military history, regional and local history, history of art, economic and social history, history of the Discoveries and the Portuguese expansion, theory of history, demography, history and public opinion, history and the cinema, history and poetry, history and the novel, history and nationalism, history and colonialism;
b) currents in historiography
to include Liberal historiography, traditionalist historiography, positivism, Integralism, the Seara Nova group, Marxism, the Annales and structuralism.
3. Institutions to which historians have been linked:
entries will cover the universities and their departments (Curso Superior de Letras, Faculties of Letters, Faculties of Law), the Torre do Tombo National Archive, the academies (Portuguese Academy of History, Academy of Sciences), historical societies (Portuguese Society for Historical Studies, Portuguese Society for the History of Civilization).
4. Periodicals:
entries will discuss the main publications, both specialist and non-specialist, such as O Panorama, Arquivo Histórico Português, O Diabo, Revista de História, Seara Nova, etc.
