Portugal and its history were always on the horizon of José Honório Rodrigues' concerns, although his nationalist political positions projected onto his historiographical practice invariably led him to prioritise Brazil as the focus of his concerns. Thus, not only can we highlight his vast work on what he called "colonial historiography" (comprised of Portuguese authors whom Rodrigues tries to judge according to greater or lesser degrees of adherence to Brazilian national sentiments, which, at the time, evidently did not exist), or his writings on the process of independence which, of course, must always be considered as part of the history of Portugal. He also wrote a number of smaller works on topics such as Portuguese overseas expansion, the creation of the empire, Portuguese historians, and contemporary Portuguese themes. Examples of this are: "António Vieira, doutrinador do imperialismo português" [António Vieira, doctrinaire of Portuguese imperialism], published in Verbum magazine (Rio de Janeiro, 1958); "D. Henrique e a abertura da fronteira mundial" [King Henrique and the opening of the world frontier], in Revista Portuguesa de História no. 9 (Coimbra, 1961); the reviews of two works by Fréderic Mauro (Revista Brasileira de Estudos Políticos no. 34, Belo Horizonte, July 1972), two by J. S. da Silva Dias (Revista de História 47/96, 1973), and one by Luís Reis Torgal (Revista de História 51/101, 1975); an obituary of the Portuguese historian Virgínia Rau (Revista de História 47/97, 1974); "A vitória da língua portuguesa no Brasil colonial" [The victory of the Portuguese language in colonial Brazil] (História viva , 1985); and an article published in a widely circulated non-academic Brazilian magazine: "Holanda e Portugal. Um paralelo entre dois mundos” [The Netherlands and Portugal. A parallel between two worlds] (Manchete , Rio de Janeiro, 31 January 1970). In addition, among the many academic meetings in which he took part, we can mention five editions of the International Colloquium of Luso-Brazilian Studies, held in Washington (1950), São Paulo (1954), Lisbon (1957), Salvador (1959), and Cambridge & New York (1966).
