Notwithstanding his particularly fragile state of health, due to which he was not infrequently in convalescence, he followed through on his commitments until he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He progressively relinquished his intellectual tasks, and by 1983 had abandoned all his positions. He died two years later at the Hospital de Santa Maria [Saint Mary’s Hospital] (Lisbon). He was consecrated to posterity by Vasco Berardo in a statue inaugurated in 2005 in Sertã. In the same year, the international conference “Padre Manuel Antunes (1918-1985) – Interfaces da Cultura Portuguesa e Europeia” ["Father Manuel Antunes (1918-1985) - Interfaces of Portuguese and European Culture"] was held, which brought together former students, colleagues, and friends. The Instituto Europeu de Ciências da Cultura [European Institute of Cultural Sciences] was also founded and named after him, in a partnership between the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa and the Escola Superior de Artes Decorativas da Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo [School of Decorative Arts of the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation].
