In the field of the history of religious thought, his work is extensive and his studies on the Oratorians , Franciscans, and Jesuits stand out. Later, he carried out original research into the history of education based on unpublished primary sources, in particular A reforma pombalina dos estudos secundários no Brasil (1.ª fase : 1759 a 1771) [The Pombaline Reform of secondary education in Brazil (1 st phase: 1759 to 1771)] (São Paulo, Universidade / Saraiva- Livreiros Editores , 1978), A reforma pombalina dos estudos secundários (1759-1771): contribuição para a história da pedagogia em Portugal [The Pombaline Reform of secondary studies (1759-1771): a contribution to the history of pedagogy in Portugal] (Doctoral thesis, 3 vols, Coimbra, By order of the University, 1981); the study A reforma pombalina dos estudos secundários no Arquipélago dos Açores : 1.ª fase 1759-71 [ The Pombaline Reform of secondary studies in the Azores archipelago] (Ponta Delgada, University of the Azores, 1983) was published posthumously.
