I n his capacity as a researcher at the then Overseas Scientific Research Board, A. A. Banha de Andrade published a wide range of articles on colonial history, including A política portuguesa em África no século XVIII [The Portuguese policy in Africa in the 18 th Century] (1953); Many races, one nation. The traditional antiracialism of Portugal’s civilizing method (1954) translated into Portuguese the following year so as to be used as a textbook in the courses taught by the National Adult Education Campaign , and both versions had several revised editions; O mundo em que vivemos : Ásia e África [T he world we live in: Asia and Africa] , together with Olga Alves Simões de Carvalho and Artur Anselmo (Lisboa, Verbo Juvenil, 1966); Mundos novos do mundo (Panorama da difusão , pela Europa, de notícias dos descobrimentos geográficos portugueses ) [New worlds of the world (Panorama of the dissemination of news of the Portuguese geographical discoveries throughout Europe)] (2 vols., 1972); Antecedentes da travessia de África [Background to the crossing of Africa] (1981); some of his studies were republished posthumously. In the field of local/regional history, from 1975 onwards, he carried out around fifteen studies on Montemor-o-Novo, many of them published in the collection ‘ Cadernos de História de Montemor-o-Novo’ covering the history of the town, festivals and fairs held in the region, the Municipal Archive and its documentation, and the history of Alentejo art. His work on religious history, cultural history and the history of education has kept Banha de Andrade as an indispensable researcher for the development of current and future projects in these areas.
