Portuguese Society of Historical Studies (SPEH) 1911–1928

A clear inspiration can be observed from a foreign periodical, the Revue deSynthèseHistorique , directed by Henri Berr (one of Fidelino's references ) and founded at the beginning of the century. However, the best characterisation of the RevistadeHistória came from the SPEH itself: in a brochure published by the society in 1915, which remains a valuable working tool even today, the RH was described as follows: “ The RevistadeHistória seeks to reconcile the function of archiving materials with that of synthesis, promoting the dissemination of sources and the construction of history. It is also concerned with the theoretical issues of historical sciences and the methodology of its teaching” ( RevistaPortuguesa deHistória… , p. 14). Indeed, throughout its existence, the journal established a balance between the publication of sources (official documents, letters, etc.) and interpretative articles on specific and, in other cases, broader themes. In this regard, a diverse range of authors contributed to the RH. Some even took the opportunity to present ongoing research, such as Fidelino (literary criticism), João Lúcio de Azevedo ( " Estudos para a história dos cristãos novos em Portugal" [ Studies for the history of the New Christians in Portugal ], vol. 1), and Fortunato de Almeida (for instance, " Portugueses no concílio de Trento" [The Portuguese at the Council of Trent ] , in RevistadeHistória , vol. 2, pp. 151-166). In other cases, young researchers such as Charles Boxer, Vieira de Almeida, and Paulo Merêa published some of their first works.
The volume of publications was not consistent. During the first five years, the number of published articles was high (exceeding 20 annually), but it declined substantially from 1916 onwards (as previously mentioned regarding the year 1915). Notable contributions include Fidelino, with 36 articles; Pedro de Azevedo, with 20 (although most were source publications); Edgar Prestage, with 12; João Lúcio de Azevedo, with 12; and Fortunato de Almeida, with 11. Among the 127 members, 46 authored articles, complemented by an impressive group of 71 contributors to the journal as a whole (58 of whom published articles).
