Notable figures among the members include Fidelino de Figueiredo, Anselmo Braamcamp Freire (1849–1921), António Ginestal Machado (1874–1940), Damião Peres (1889–1976), Henrique da Gama Barros (1833–1925), João Lúcio de Azevedo (1855–1933), José Maria de Queiroz Veloso (1860–1952), Fortunato de Almeida (1869–1933), Manuel Paulo Merêa (1889–1977), Francisco Vieira de Almeida (1888–1962), as well as foreign figures such as Edgar Prestage (1869–1951), Manuel de Oliveira Lima (1867–1928), Charles Raymond Beazley (1868–1955), and Charles Oman (1860–1946), among many others . Some members likely contributed only their names to the society, although they were still recognised as members. Others, whose names may not appear on the list, played notable roles, as in the case of Teófilo Braga. António Sérgio, whose name is listed for only one year, provided active contributions, particularly with ideas regarding the organisation of the SPEH and the RevistadeHistória . However, a disagreement with Fidelino de Figueiredo led to Sérgio’s departure ( A SPEH nocontextohistoriográficonacional , pp. 57-58).
Although the society’s statutes stipulated that new members were required to meet certain criteria (Article 4), such as publishing specialised works, membership invitations were often extended by recommendation, initially via the " circular-programme " and later by letter. Fidelino’s passive correspondence reveals examples of this practice. For instance, members such as William Ker (1865–1938), a professor at the University of London; Sir Clements Markham (1830–1916), former president of the Royal Geographical Society of London; and Charles Oman, a professor at the University of Oxford, were suggested to Fidelino by Edgar Prestage ( A SPEH nocontextohistoriográfico , p. 57). The level of member participation in SPEH activities varied greatly. Fidelino de Figueiredo was undoubtedly the central figure—founder, secretary, and the society’s most prolific contributor to the RevistadeHistória . Other active participants, particularly during the early years, included Pedro de Azevedo, Fortunato de Almeida, and Edgar Prestage.
