Portuguese Society of Historical Studies (SPEH) 1911–1928

The SPEH endeavoured to bring several other initiatives to fruition. In 1915, to commemorate the centenaries of the conquest of Ceuta and the death of Afonso de Albuquerque, the society planned to hold an international congress: the First Ibero-American Congress of History and Auxiliary Sciences (see the project in EstudosdeLiteratura , 1st series, p. 210 and subsequent pages). This event would likely have been one of the most significant scientific gatherings up to that point, with the participation of dozens of delegates, potentially rivalling initiatives by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the Lisbon Geographical Society. However, due to the ongoing World War I , the congress was never realised, and even the ACL and SGL ceremonies were limited to two solemn sessions. Unfortunately, this was not the only failed initiative by the SPEH. The society also intended to produce a BibliografiaHistóricaPortuguesa [ Portuguese Historical Bibliography ] , involving authors such as Fortunato de Almeida, Edgar Prestage, Joaquim Fontes, and Fidelino de Figueiredo. This work was only partially published by Edgar Prestage in the RevistadeHistória (vol. 3, pp. 350–353). The bibliography was meant to cover nine distinct periods, from the Christian Reconquest to 1820–1910, with Prestage assigned the seventh period (1640 to the Cortes of 1697). However, this bibliography, partially published in the RevistadeHistória , appears to have been intended for another publication venue, given the likely extensive nature of the work. In the final edition of O Espírito Histórico (1920) by Fidelino de Figueiredo, there is not only a clearer exposition of its premises but also the inclusion of a BibliografiaHistórica . Fidelino had undertaken this effort previously, but a broader scope can be observed in this edition. It is possible that some of the work carried out within that framework was utilised.
This work is financed by national funds through FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P, in the scope of the projects UIDB/04311/2020 and UIDP/04311/2020.
