Throughout his academic career, Alden has taught courses on Latin American History, Brazilian History, and Mexican History, and collaborated with Dan Waugh on an audiovisual course titled A Europa descobre o mundo [Europe Discovers the World], which focused on the 18th century. He has also conducted research in Portugal, Brazil, India, Australia, Italy, England, Japan, and China. His work The Making of an Enterprise: The Society of Jesus in Portugal, its Empire, and Beyond, 1540-1750 encompasses information from five continents, representing a comprehensive study in the field of connected history, as it investigates the activities of the Society of Jesus within the Portuguese colonial empire from its foundation until its expulsion in 1759. Through this work, he was awarded the John Gilmary Shea Prize in 1997 by the American Catholic Historical Association. In recent years, Dauril Alden has explored the eventful life of British historian Charles Boxer, a scholar of the Portuguese and Dutch colonial empires, and has established himself as Boxer’s foremost biographer.
