Thus, the main mentor of the Revista Militar, Fontes Pereira de Melo, anticipated the great success for the publication he was launching and outlined its guiding principles: "We write solely for those who aspire to an educated army and for those who, even while serving in the lower ranks, wish to easily acquire the knowledge that will enable them to achieve the high positions they will one day attain, with honour and for the public good. It is for these individuals that the Revista Militar , the product of the dedication of certain officers who, while aiming to be of service to their comrades, also seek to learn through writing. May this publication be welcomed by the majority of the army and the country's educated men, and may this boldness of a few years old, who trust only in God and His good will, awaken in more skilful men the desire to illustrate themselves and to be useful to a class that deserves so much from the homeland" ("Introducção" [Introduction], Revista Militar , tome I, no. 1, January 1849, p. 19).
Continuously respecting its primary characteristics and the rules of its Statutes , it retains its original title— Revista Militar —with no other subtitle and a monthly periodicity, although it has occasionally run fortnightly. Currently, 9 monthly issues a year are published, with around 600-700 copies, although these functional particularities (layout, number of pages, extracts, special issues) fluctuate depending on specific contingencies. The typical contents of the magazine's internal structure changed over the course of its editorial life, as is understandable, including editorials, chronicles, news reports, scientific articles, literary reflections, political libels, necrologies, advertisements, etc.
