The historian and the scientific researcher, but essentially the readers of the Revista Militar, will be able to find countless articles here on multiple general areas or specific disciplines: military administration; public administration; weaponry; arts, sciences and literature; national defence; law and justice; military discipline; military education; military establishments; strategy and tactics; military ethics; security forces; geography; history and military history, adding up to a vast wealth to be explored profitably from a historiographical perspective, among other approaches. The universe of military periodicals represents a repository of information that remains only superficially examined by traditional historiographical currents, despite a few academic efforts to address this gap . Combining history and communication—parallel and reciprocal domains—the specific field of military periodical press emerges as fertile ground for historiographical analysis, not only in the precise realm of Ars Bellicæ , but also because these periodicals serve as excellent barometers of everyday life.
The Revista Militar remains a milestone of military periodical information, and, through the intercession of historians, chroniclers, journalists, and intellectuals, military or not, who have written about history in all its aspects, including military themes, it assumes itself as a mirror of Portuguese society itself: "A great benchmark that distinguishes the Revista Militar was the plethora of intellectuals who seriously produced the articles and memories that make up the pages of the periodical, discourses that correspond to various technical, scientific, literary, and historical constructions. Although they don't always converge, they represent a unity that has overcome the heterogeneity of the various discourses. The development and progress of the military institution and of the country were the great concern of the periodical and united everyone in this great endeavour" (José Luís Assis, Ciência & Técnica [Science & Technique] in Revista Militar 1849-1910 , p. 223).
