Featuring a simple layout, it promoted the inclusion of photographs and illustrations from the outset, although not printed in colour, and images were not used in abundance, which is still the case. The periodical continues to present dense and aesthetically sober texts, as it is aimed at a more literate audience, given the scientific nature of its content. With a current list price of €7.00 (single issue), it is possible to subscribe to this publication at different prices for military personalities, civilians and organisations in Portugal and abroad.
The Revista Militar was governed by three different statutes, including those that refer to its foundation, by virtue of the "Contrato de Empresa da Revista Militar" [Military Magazine Company Agreement] dated 1 December 1848. They were revised again on 1 January 1862, followed by the Statutes of Recognition and Support expressed by the Ministry of War on 7 December 1905. Therefore, the Empresa da Revista Militar is currently governed by the 1905 statutes and the internal regulations approved at the general meeting on 10 December 1996. The number of permanent members should not exceed 70, and officers who have distinguished themselves as contributors to Revista Militar or civilians dedicated to defence issues may be elected. The profound institutional transformation that took place in 1905 must be distinguished, which prompted a reorganisation of several military publications, which merged organically with the Revista Militar . Since then, it has had direct public funding, and the choice of director has been under the direct authority of the Minister of War, now the Minister of Defence.
What are the nature, functions and core goals of the magazine? Although initiated by a private company and conceived within military circles, the creation and evolution of this periodical became deeply intertwined with the political-military landscape, spanning from the era of constitutional monarchy through the republican regime to the present day. It has consistently fought for a critical and scientific understanding of the concept of "national defence". It is true that the connection to official tutelage occurred at a different time, but there was always an explicit link with the state and military and scientific institutions. In this context, we can appreciate the prominence afforded to history, along with the magazine's consistent presence in discussions on both national and international issues.
