In Portugal, collective scientific meetings on the History of Education began quite late. In October 1987, Áurea Adão and Rogério Fernandes, with support from the Education Service of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Department of Education at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, organised the 1st Meeting on the History of Education in Portugal . This event featured studies evaluating the state and prospects of historical-educational research (specially commissioned for the occasion), individual presentations on completed projects, and two lectures by foreign researchers (Julio Ruiz Berrio and Pierre Caspard), focusing on research conducted in Spain and France and the respective forms of association among researchers. However, the 2nd Meeting did not occur until November 1996, organised by the History of Education Section of the Portuguese Society of Educational Sciences (Justino Magalhães, ed., Fazer e ensinar História da Educação em Portugal… [ Making and Teaching the History of Education in Portugal], ( 1998). The 3rd Meeting followed from March 31 to April 2, 2005 (Pintassilgo et al., A História da Educação em Portugal… [The History of Education in Portugal...], 2007), and the 4th Meeting was held in 2007.
On the international stage, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation played a key role in establishing initial connections with international associations for the History of Education, notably the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE). This relationship was strengthened through congresses held in Lisbon and Porto (1993, 2019), initially under the auspices of the History of Education Section of the Portuguese Society of Educational Sciences and, more recently, under the Portuguese Association for the History of Education. In 1992, António Nóvoa initiated the 1st Iberian Meeting on the History of Education , which has since continued biennially, alternating between Portugal and Spain. Similarly, due to the efforts of Rogério Fernandes, Áurea Adão, and Elza Nadai, the 1st Luso-Brazilian Congress on the History of Education was held in Lisbon in 1996, an event that remains biennial, alternating between Portugal and Brazil. Since 1999, the SPICAE Network, composed of researchers from Southern Europe, has regularly organised scientific meetings on various themes, creating opportunities to analyse and compare the historical-educational processes of these countries. More recently, Portuguese researchers also participated in the Ibero-American International Congress on the History of Education (CIHELA). These gatherings have significantly contributed to the development of networked scientific production and bilateral projects, while also fostering reflection on the role of the History of Education within the university context and its scientific purpose.
