It is essential to highlight Colonel of Artillery Henrique de Campos Ferreira Lima (1882–1949), who served as the director (and reformer) of the Arquivo Histórico Militar [Military Historical Archive] from 1927 to 1949. His extensive body of work includes hundreds of studies dedicated to both national and international historical figures who excelled in military service. He was one of the scholars responsible for the restoration of the Portuguese Academy of History, revitalising military historiographical thought and imbuing it with a renewed critical energy influenced by methodical approaches. This is evident in works such as Gomes Freire de Andrade: notas bibliográficas e iconográficas… [Gomes Freire de Andrade: Bibliographical and Iconographical Notes…] (1919), O Tenente-General Bartolomeu da Costa: notícia biográfica [Lieutenant General Bartolomeu da Costa: A Biographical Note] (1924), and «Os Suíços no Exército Português [The Swiss in the Portuguese Army] (1937), among others.
Among the historians who contributed to advances in m ilitary h istoriography, it is essential to mention Captain Gastão de Mello de Matos (1890–1971), a figure closely associated with the historiography of the Estado Novo . He specialised in the historical period of the Restoration, particularly its military aspects. If there is a work of m ilitary h istory that continues to serve as a study manual for students in national military institutes, schools, and academies, it is undoubtedly Portugal Militar.Compêndio de História Militar e Naval de Portugal desde as origens do Estado Portucalense até ao fim da Dinastia de Bragança [Military Portugal: A Compendium of Military and Naval History of Portugal from the Origins of the Portucalense State to the End of the Bragança Dynasty] (1931, 1936; 1991, 1994, 1999, 2006). This work, authored by Carlos Selvagem (the literary pseudonym of Carlos Tavares de Andrade Afonso dos Santos, 1890–1973), was intended to meet the educational needs of officers across all military branches, as requested by the Ministry of War (1926). However, d espite its nationalist inclination, it remains in demand among the general public. Carlos Selvagem, a nickname from his days at the Colégio Militar, also served as governor of northern Mozambique during the First World War, president of the Portuguese Society of Authors, and author of titles such as A batalha de La Lys e o Marechal Gomes da Costa [The Battle of La Lys and Marshal Gomes da Costa] (1963) and D. João IV e as Guerras da Restauração, os Generais e os Diplomatas, as Letras e as Artes [King John IV and the Wars of the Restoration, the Generals and Diplomats, the Letters and the Arts] (1972).
