Among the fundamental reference works in contemporary m ilitary h istoriography, the Nova História Militar de Portugal [New Military History of Portugal] (vols. I–V, 2003–2004), under Manuel Themudo Barata and Nuno Severiano Teixeira, stands out as exceptional. This work brought together a range of leading experts in the field. The phenomenon of "war" is analysed from the mediaeval period, traversing the early modern era and extending into contemporary times, including the “new experiences of war,” authored by numerous collaborators. It is the first Military History of Portugal published since Portugal Militar… [Military Portugal…] (1931) by Carlos Selvagem—excluding its various re-editions—though the latter remains an essential title. Of particular interest is the recent synthesis coordinated by Nuno Severiano Teixeira, in collaboration with Francisco Contente Domingues and João Gouveia Monteiro, presented in História Militar de Portugal [Military History of Portugal] (2017).
Regarding the institutional memory of the Army, the publication of the Boletim do Arquivo Histórico Militar [Bulletin of the Military Historical Archive] since 1930, under the responsibility of the Arquivo Histórico Militar (AHM) [Military Historical Archive], must be highlighted. This publication contains an extensive repository of military information and serves as an indispensable tool for documentary research. In the same domain, the meticulous work of document collection in the numerous volumes of the Resenha Histórico-Militar das Campanhas de África [Historical Military Review of the African Campaigns] (1961–1974) deserves mention. Its publication has been overseen by the Comissão para o Estudo das Campanhas de África (CECA) [Commission for the Study of the African Campaigns] since 1988, under the authority of the Direcção de História e Cultura Militar [Directorate of Military History and Culture] (DHCM).
