Regarding bibliographical initiatives that complement historical military research, Brigadier General Francisco Augusto Martins de Carvalho (1844–1921) is worth y of note . In addition to his studies on military themes, bibliographic al studies, and local history, he compiled the Diccionario Bibliographico Militar Portuguez [Portuguese Military Bibliographical Dictionary] (1891; 1976–1979). Modelled after Inocêncio Francisco da Silva’s Diccionario Bibliographico Portuguez [Portuguese Bibliographical Dictionary] (1858–1923), the complete re-edition of this work, initiated in 1976, remains incomplete.
Among the historians who expanded the scientific and epistemological possibilities of Military h istory is Francisco Marques de Sousa Viterbo (c. 1845/6–1910), a Portuguese poet, archaeologist, historian, and journalist. He is the author of Diccionario Historico e Documental dos Architectos, Engenheiros e Constructores Portuguezes ou a serviço de Portugal [Historical and Documentary Dictionary of Portuguese Architects, Engineers, and Builders or of those at the Service of Portugal] (1899–1922). However, in terms of the conceptual progress of Military Sciences, which encompass m ilitary h istory, the works of Major General Sebastião Custódio de Sousa Teles (1847–1921) are noteworthy . His Introducção ao Estudo dos Conhecimentos Militares [Introduction to the Study of Military Knowledge] (1887; 1947) was awarded the D. Luís I Prize (1891) by the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. This work is of particular relevance to national military thought, characterised by a positivist approach that was not uninfluenced by m ilitary h istory and l iterature.
One of the most promising military historians of the second half of the 19th century was Major Fernando da Costa Maya (1853–1904). Educated at the Polytechnic School and the Military Academy, where he later taught, his erudition is evidenced in A Província do Porto , the Diário de Notícias , and the Revista Militar , among other publications. He authored Subsidios para a Historia Militar de Portugal [Contributions to the Military History of Portugal] (1902) and Memoria Historica e Descriptiva do Real Collegio Militar [Historical and Descriptive Account of the Royal Military College] (1903), among other works that earned him European recognition.
