Finally, and moving to more recent times, it is essential to highlight the historians who have renewed Military Historiography, including General Manuel Themudo Barata (1920–2003), Colonel Carlos da Costa Gomes Bessa (1922–2013), and General Gabriel do Espírito Santo (1935–2014). Their contributions must be noted alongside the extensive scholarly production of General José Loureiro dos Santos, General António Martins Barrento, Lieutenant Colonel António Lopes Pires Nunes, Colonel Luís Alves de Fraga, Colonel Aniceto Afonso, and Colonel Carlos de Matos Gomes , not omitting other military historians or, on another level, the growing relevance of civilian historians, namely António Pedro Vicente, Fernando Pereira Marques, António José Telo, and Nuno Severiano Teixeira. Nor should the historiographical works of Rui Bebiano, João Gouveia Monteiro, Miguel Gomes Martins, and other active intellectuals be overlooked, as they continue to rethink history and m ilitary h istoriography in all its conceptual breadth.
At the institutional level, the multiple initiatives of the Comissão Portuguesa de História Militar (CPHM) [Portuguese Commission of Military History] (1989) must be acknowledged. This military organisation undertakes academic endeavours spanning all branches of the Armed Forces and national and international academic circles. It plays an essential role in the expression and renewal of m ilitary h istoriography, working in conjunction with historiographical activities in universities, which are increasingly receptive to these research fields. To this end, the CPHM has promoted annual colloquia and international congresses since 1990, in alignment with the Comissão Internacional de História Militar (CIHM). These events have addressed new facets of m ilitary h istory in Portugal, Europe, and on an intercontinental scale. By highlighting numerous military figures in Portuguese society throughout history, military technical-scientific advances, and political-military events, the CPHM has revitalised the hermeneutics of the “phenomenon of war,” as evidenced in its published proceedings. To encourage military historiographical studies, it annually awards the Prémio Defesa Nacional [National Defence Prize], which recognises works of m ilitary h istory by Portuguese citizens.
