In the historiographical discourse of m ilitary a rchaeology, the enthusiasm of Lieutenant Colonel Afonso do Paço (1895–1968), one of the most revered archaeologists, deserves recognition. In another vein, and following the archival tradition essential to historiographical progress—exemplified by Cláudio Bernardo Pereira de Chaby—are the works of Colonel Horácio Madureira dos Santos (1900–?), director of the Military Historical Archive. His research is indispensable for studying the Restoration (1640–1668), as demonstrated in Catálogo dos Decretos do extinto Conselho de Guerra na parte não publicada pelo general Cláudio de Chaby [Catalogue of the Decrees from the Extinct Council of War in the Unpublished Section by General Cláudio de Chaby] (1958), Cartas e outros documentos da época da Guerra da Aclamação [Letters and Other Documents from the War of Acclamation Era] (1973), and Decretos do extinto Conselho de Guerra: índice geral onomástico e complemento ao aditamento do catálogo dos decretos existentes, por cópia [Decrees from the E xtinct Council of War: General Onomastic Index and Supplement to the Addendum to the Catalogue of Existing Decrees, by Copy] (1977).
Turning to the historiographical perspectives prevalent until the late 1970s, already in a democratic context, and regarding the key figures and general directions of m ilitary h istoriography, the profound academic influence of General Luís Maria da Câmara Pina (1904–1980) must be acknowledged. As director of the Revista Militar and a member of various scientific associations, including the Portuguese Academy of History, he contributed significantly to the development of m ilitary h istoriography during a period of pronounced stagnation. His works played a vital role in reversing this trend, including Jomini, grande senhor da Estratégia [Jomini, the Great Master of Strategy] (1946), Relances de História [Glimpses of History] (1969), Da personalidade militar de D. Afonso Henrique» [On the Military Personality of D. Afonso Henriques] (1977), and A batalha de S. Mamede (24-VI-1128): subsídios para a sua história militar [The Battle of São Mamede (24 June 1128): Contributions to i ts m ilitary h istory] (1978).
