Among the advocates for the dissemination of m ilitary h istory is Major General António Florêncio de Sousa Pinto (1818–1890). A founding member and editor of the Revista Militar , he served as president of the Sociedade Histórica da Independência de Portugal [Historical Society for the Independence of Portugal] and was one of the founders of the Grémio Literário de Lisboa [Lisbon Literary Guild]. He authored numerous works on technical-military, literary, and journalistic topics, which were compiled in Divagações Históricas [Historical Digressions] (1887), where he called for the promotion of historical heritage in the education of military elites.
Among the most renowned Portuguese military historians, Major General Cláudio Bernardo Pereira de Chaby (1818–1905) holds a distinguished place. He was attached to the Historical Section of the General Archive of the Ministry of War, where he gathered historical-military documentation spanning from the mid-17th century to the early 19th century. Additionally, he conducted research in Spanish military archives to uncover documents related to the Peninsular War. His efforts resulted in some of the most prestigious works in this domain, including Excerptos Historicos e Collecção de Documentos relativos á Guerra denominada da Peninsula e ás anteriores de 1801, e do Roussillon e Cataluña… [Historical Excerpts and Collection of Documents r elating to the So-Called Peninsular War and the Earlier Wars of 1801, Roussillon, and Catalonia…] (1863–1882). Another of his notable works was the publication of Apontamentos para a historia da Legião Portugueza ao serviço de Napoleão I mandada sahir de Portugal em 1808, narrativa do tenente Theotonio Banha [Notes for the History of the Portuguese Legion at the Service of Napoleon I, Sent from Portugal in 1808: A Narrative by Lieutenant Theotonio Banha] (1863). Finally, his monumental work focusing on the activities of the Council of War (1640–1834), Synopse dos decretos remmetidos ao extinto Conselho de Guerra, desde o estabelecimento d’este tribunal em 11 de Dezembro de 1640, até á sua extincção decretada em 1.º de Julho de 1834… [Synopsis of the Decrees s ent to the e xtinct Council of War, from the Establishment of t his Tribunal on 11 December 1640 to i ts A bolition Decreed on 1 July 1834…] (1869–1889), deserves particular mention for its scale and significance.
